The USDA Forest Service, Pacific Northwest Research Station anticipates advertising a position for Research Social Scientist, GS-0101, Grade 12 or 13.  Grade level will depend on qualifications. This is a full-time permanent position under the federal Research Grade Evaluation Guide (RGEG) system of panel evaluation and promotion.

  • Research Social Scientist, GS-12/13  Potential Locations:  Wenatchee, WA, Seattle, WA, Corvallis, OR,  or LaGrande, OR  (Final locations TBD.)

We anticipate that the ideal candidate would have a Ph.D. in one of the social science disciplines (e.g., anthropology, sociology, geography, political science, rural or community development, economics, psychology, human dimensions of natural resources) or a related field. Applicants must meet minimum educational and/or experiential qualifications for the Research Social Scientist 0101 series at the GS-12 level. Current United States citizenship is required.

The incumbent will be expected to develop a program of both basic and applied research with a particular focus on landscapes and communities east of the Cascades, as well as other areas in the Pacific Northwest.  Priority research is anticipated in one or more of the following areas: the social causes and consequences of large-scale disturbance events (e.g., wildfire, insect outbreaks); climate change vulnerability, adaptation, and mitigation; tribal resource management; the social dimensions of forest restoration; collaboration and public engagement; the social dimensions of forest restoration; or public lands use and access. The incumbent is expected to work very closely with the other interdisciplinary team of scientists on the various initiatives within the Station’s broader research framework direction.
